Birchbark Biting Necklace (Acimostawin ~tell me a story~) (Rectangle, 30 inch chain)
The birch tree has many uses in First Nations culture. From canoes to baskets to tea, the tree is one of life’s forgotten treasures. Historically, writings and drawings were carved into thin layers much like you would draw in a book. However, the pen of choice was one’s teeth. The intricate designs were used as adornment for baskets, as well as templates for painted designs, quill art and beadwork. It later became more popular as a standalone art piece.
This birch bark biting was created by a Rock Cree First Nations artist, Kari Lentowicz, from Treaty Territory 10 in North Eastern Saskatchewan, where the tree of life flourishes.
It was incorporated into jewellery by Holly Mansell of Clover Laine Designs who grew up in Treaty Territory 5 in North Western Manitoba.
Available on a 30 inch antique bronze chain. No two pieces of this unique wearable art are alike.
